10 Great Comedies to Watch When You Need a Good Laugh

I love movies. My husband and I literally met working in a video store as teens, where our entire job was to basically watch movies and recommend them to customers. It was seriously the best job ever. (you can read our story here)

Most of the movies on this list I’ve seen multiple times, and forced all my family and friends to watch as well LOL. Hope you find some you like…and please let me know your favorites too!

#1 Best in Show (2000)

I’m starting off the list with a movie that never fails to make me laugh. Best in Show is about five dogs and their owners, trainers and handlers, all on their way to compete in the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show. Much of the movie is improvised by the talented cast, including Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara. Even if you don’t like dogs, this movie is funny, but if you are a dog lover, it’s a must-see.

#2 Spy (2015)

Melissa McCarthy never disappoints in the laughs department, and Spy is one of my favorites of hers. It also stars Jude Law, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham, and Allison Janney, all of whom are excellent here. It’s fast-paced, action-packed and hilarious. Don’t miss it.

#3 Game Night (2018)

I’ve loved Jason Bateman for a loooong time…I’m talking his Little House on the Prairie and Silver Spoons days LOL. He stars in Game Night with Rachel McAdams, where a Murder Mystery Party goes awry. The plot twists and turns and doesn’t disappoint. Add some popcorn and you’ve got yourself a fun Saturday night.

#4 I Want You Back (2022)

The newest movie on my list, I watched this last month and was pleasantly surprised. It stars Jenny Slate and Charlie Day, both recently dumped by their significant others, who hatch a plan together to get them back. A sweet little film.

#5 The Wedding Singer (1998)

True confession: I’m not a huge fan of most Adam Sandler movies, I usually find him a little too silly. The Wedding Singer is an exception, and I’ve probably seen it ten times. He stars with Drew Barrymore, adorable as usual, in this Rom-Com that has both humor and heart.

#6 When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Ok, ok, I know you’ve probably already seen it but how could I make a list of comedies and not include When Harry Met Sally? It’s a classic and it’s still funny 30 years later. Who could possibly forget “I’ll have what she’s having” in the diner scene?? It was filmed at Katz’s Delicatessen in New York City, where they currently have a sign dangling from the ceiling reading, “Where Harry met Sally…Hope you have what she had!” LOL

#7The Heat (2013)

I absolutely loved this movie…all three times I watched it! It stars Sandra Bullock as an FBI agent and Melissa McCarthy as a hot-headed detective. They make quite the dynamic duo trying to take down a drug lord in Boston. Funny and action-packed.

#8 13 Going on 30 (2004)

Jennifer Garner is perfectly cast as Jenna, a 13-year-old girl that wakes up as her 30-year-old self. 13 Going on 30 is charming, nostalgic and funny. A really good family movie (recommended for ages 12 and up).

#9 Bridesmaids

I know, another Melissa McCarthy movie? Apologies, but, I mean, she’s hilarious. Fun fact about Bridesmaids: my husband grew up with the woman that co-wrote it. Another fun fact: I’m pretty sure I remember literally falling out of my seat at the movie theatre while watching it. It is raunchy, gross at times (anyone remember the bridal shop scene??), and unequivocally hilarious. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph star and their comic genius shines through.

#10 My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

This is basically a movie about my family, except we are Italian instead of Greek. I married a non-Italian and brought him into my crazy, loud, large Italian bunch, just like what happens to John Corbett in the movie. The movie was written by Nia Vardalos, who also stars, and the writing is fabulous. Fun fact: My Big Fat Greek Wedding became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, grossing $241 million in North America, despite NEVER reaching number one at the box office. It was the highest-grossing film with that distinction for 14 years, until Sing grossed 268 million in 2016. Anyway, it’s a great, fun, family movie and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it!
